This book does exactly what the title says and contains a range of very moving and emotional letters sent to organ donor families by patients who have received donated organs. As health care professionals working within critical care we already know that 3 people die each and every day in the United Kingdom as there are not enough organs available. As critical care professionals we should already be working hard at ensuring that suitable patients are identified as potential donors and we know the benefits that donation brings to donor families. This book provides the readers with a perspective from the other side and illustrates stories of the life-changing benefits of organ donation to the recipients by using the letters they have written to donor families. These are simple thank you letters but they are very powerful and they clearly show the difference transplants make to the lives of those in need of donated organs. This book is a unique tribute to the altruistic nature of all donor families.
The book is illustrated throughout and is easy to read. In my opinion I think this book would make a useful addition to all critical care units where organ donation takes place, and should be used for educational purposes. Although not intended to be used by critical care staff at the time of organ donation this book will be offered to organ donor families by the specialist nurses in organ donation (SNOD) at a suitable time after the donation has taken place.
