"A Winter Cooler Study Evening - Therapeutic Hypothermia Post Cardiac Arrest"

The BACCN North West region held their first study evening on the 28th January at the Royal Oldham Hospital. "A Winter Cooler" looked at various aspects of Therapeutic Hypothermia following cardiac arrests. The evening began with a hot buffet and then two sessions on the anatomy and physiology of hypoxic brain damage and why inducing hypothermia should reduce it and what the evidence is so far for using therapeutic hypothermia.

The third session was a work shop by 4 company representatives showing us four different ways of cooling patients, this proved a very popular session. The final session was by a sister from Walton Neurological Centre who have used therapeutic hypothermia for many years, although in a slightly different context than post cardiac arrest. She was able to give us valuable insight into the nursing care of these patients together with the pro’s and con’s of the various cooling systems on the market.

A total of 42 people attended the event, travelling from all over the region. The event evaluated extremely well with many people commenting "excellent evening", "interesting and informative" "good networking opportunity".
