Proposed Next BACCN Position Statement
As many BACCN members will know you were emailed over the last months regarding what topic the next position statement should be about. Of 1473 members emailed with five suggested topics, 75 responded and voted for one or more of the suggested topics, or suggested a new topic. At the February Board meeting all of these topics were discussed at length and a decision made. Before we inform you on the chosen topic we would like to tell you why the other topics were not chosen.
DELIRIUM – there are NICE guidelines due out in 2010 about this topic and until they are available we are unable to comment on BACCN position.
COMPETENCIES – there is some work being undertaken by the Critical Care Nurse Education Review Forum (which involves BACCN, Critical Care Network Nurses, several universities and Skills for Health) and as information becomes available we will inform you.
CARBON EMISSIONS – we are not sure how we as an organisation can impact on this at this time
END OF LIFE care- this is covered in various key documents such as Liverpool Care Pathway, End of Life Care Strategy, the National End of life Care Programme.
THE STANDARISATION OF INOTROPE CONCENTRATION –There is some work being undertaken around standardisation of drug infusion concentrations in critical care units. RESOURCE ALLOCATION – we are not sure how we as an organisation can impact on this at this time
MENTAL CAPACITY ACT – covered by law
ADMISSION CRITERIA FOR ICU – this is set out by other organisations such as Department of Health, Intensive Care Society and we are not sure how we as an organisation can impact on this at this time
POINT OF CARE TESTING we are not sure how we as an organisation can impact on this at this time
FOLLOW UP – this is covered in the NICE guidelines of 2009
TURNING PATIENTS – although an important topic we are not sure how we as an organisation can impact on this at this time
DEMENTIA in CRITICALCARE – unclear what the respondent was referring to
PHYSICAL RESTRAINT – a position statement was published in this journal Volume 9 No 5 on pages 199 to 212
The topic chosen for the next position statement is visiting and this work will commence in the next few months. Those members who expressed an interest in this topic will be contacted and if anyone else would like to get involved please do not hesitate to contact us c/o membership@baccn.org
