May 2013INTERNATIONAL NURSES DAY PRESS RELEASE

International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world on 12th May and is an opportunity for nurses to celebrate nursing and the contribution we make to improve the lives of individuals and their families. The theme that the International Council of Nurses has chosen for 2013 is Closing the Gap: the Millennium Development Goals (MDG)

The MDG are as follows:

Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education
Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women
Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
Goal 5: Improve maternal health
Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability
Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development

Goals 4, 5, & 6 are specifically related to health and nurses across the world have been engaged in local, national and regional efforts to tackle the MDGs.

The British Association of Critical Care Nurses support our nurse colleagues nationally and internationally, and as critical care nurses care for the sickest patients in the hospital we have a role to play in these standards. The BACCN is dedicated to promoting excellence in the nursing care of critically ill patients. As well as being highly specialised in the physical and technological care, such sick patients require critical care nurses to recognise, and put in place and put in place the necessary psychological and social support

International Nurses' Day is for all nurses who care and the BACCN want to celebrate the hard work that all critical care nurses provide regardless of what position they hold.

July 2012Nursing in Critical Care awarded a well deserved Impact Factor

I am delighted to announce that in the recently released 2011 Journal Citation Reports®, ‘Nursing in Critical Care’ has been awarded an Impact Factor (IF) of 1.082 and is now ranked 36 out of the 96 in the Nursing category. Alongside of this it has achieved an immediacy index of 1.400, this is highest of all nursing journals, indicating that there is rapid citation for papers published in ‘Nursing in Critical Care’.  Of the five cited journals aimed specifically at critical care readership in the Nursing category the ranking is as follows:

American Journal of Critical Care (US) –rank 9
Heart & Lung (US) –rank 9
Nursing in Critical Care (UK)- rank 36
Critical Care Nurse (US)- rank 37
Australian Journal of Critical Care (Aus)- rank 43

This means it is the only ranked journal for critical care nursing in both the UK and Europe, and well placed in terms of the international market.

Clearly this is an outstanding achievement with a strong index of the high quality and excellent outputs disseminated throughout the journal. It is also evidence that the content and balance of papers is globally resonating well with practitioners, academics and researchers and others. However, this success would not have been possible without the unstinting support, commitment and dedication of the editors, editorial board, the international advisory board, the panel of reviewers and Wiley publishing team. The particular contributions in assessing the merits and quality of manuscripts together with the exceptional and valuable feedback provide to authors have helped to elevate the journal to a very credible, authoritative and distinguished position across the critical care community. I would like to thank the editors John Albarran and Julie Scholes for their contribution in driving this ambitious and successful initiative forward for the Journal.

The efforts and the commitment of former editors, editorial board members and  panel of reviewers has enabled us to reach this milestone in the journal’s 16 year history, it is a great accomplishment and one to be celebrated. Thanks to you all.

INTERNATIONAL NURSES DAY PRESS RELEASE

International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world on 12th May and is an opportunity for nurses to celebrate nursing and the contribution we make to improve the lives of individuals and their families. The International Council of Nurses theme for 2012 is Closing The Gap: From Evidence to Action, and focuses on the following elements: understanding evidence, sources of evidence, from evidence to action and making the case for change.

Critical Care nurses care for the sickest patients in the hospital and are highly skilled professionals. Patients requiring critical care services will be recovering from a major operation, or life threatening illness and may require the use of a life support machine.

The British Association of Critical Care Nurses is dedicated to promoting excellence in the nursing care of critically ill patients. As well as being highly specialised in the physical and technological care such sick patients require critical care nurses recognise the necessity of psychological and social support.

This year the British Association of Critical Care Nurses want to stress the importance of holistic care and the vital part, family and friends, play in the support and recovery of patients. We are marking this important day with the launching  of our National Standards on Visiting to Adult Critical Care Units in the UK. This document provides evidence based guidelines for best practice regarding visiting policies. The use of evidence based practice is in keeping with the International Council of Nurses theme for 2012. All too often in the past the decision to allow visitors into critical care units was based on individual nurses' beliefs or outdated, ritualistic traditions. The importance of support from family and friends during critical illness cannot be emphasised enough, our evidence based guidelines can be found here (pdf).

International Nurses' Day is for all nurses who care and the BACCN want to celebrate the hard work that all critical care nurses provide regardless of what position they hold.

The British Association of Critical Care Nurses Rebrands.

The British Association of Critical Care Nurses (BACCN) has appointed European brand communications agency FPP to rebrand the charity to give it a modern new look and increase its membership.

BACCN is a membership body that aims to provide opportunities and services, which support personal and professional development, and promote the art and science of critical care nursing.

FPP will create a new logo and brand guidelines which will be applied to all corporate materials from stationary to membership cards. The agency has also been appointed to roll out the new look across the website and develop a series of press advertisements in a bid to raise awareness and increase membership.

Annette Richardson, BACCN, explains why FPP won the three-way pitch:

FPP went the extra mile to really understand our brand and immediately recognised what we wanted. We are also particularly impressed by their imaginative use of budget and experience of the marketing mix, which will greatly aid our membership acquisition strategy.
